New Joke Book Uses Freud’s Theory Of Verbal Rape To Help Comedy Be Taken Seriously

LONDON (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – A new joke book wants to use one- liners and Freudian theory to help comedians be taken more seriously.

At least, that’s the ironic claim of British comedian Jimmy Carr, co-author of Only Joking: What’s So Funny About Making People Laugh? (Gotham Books), which mixes one- liners and explorations of comedy “theory” with interesting notions such as Sigmund Freud’s theory of “verbal rape.”

In Carr’s words: “Freud believed that any joke with sexual content in it is a form of verbal rape.”

But, Carr adds: “It’s amazing how many things Freud was actually wrong about – basically, everything.”

One thing Carr does find interesting about the theory, is how female comedians get more hecklers on stage, which would actually support Freud’s theory, since the male hecklers would “understand on some level that racy female comedians are trying to rape THEM.”
