‘Deadwood’ Leaving Legacy As Filthiest Mouth In The West

ST. LOUIS (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – HBO’s original series Deadwood has its season finale on Sunday (Aug. 27) but it’s not going to be shutting its foul mouth as it exits.

According to experts who’ve tracked the show’s cursing, the third season has been the dirtiest so far.

In fact, media critic David Scott Diffrient notes the show has used the f-word a total of 2,821 times during its run – beating out its use of the ever-popular “c■■■sucker by a 13 to 1 margin.

That’s a lot of cussing, but Diffrient argues it’s not as surprising as when “an actual erect penis” is “brandished” in one Deadwood episode, yet goes “virtually ignored” by observers and critics.

He says the fact that heated debates over the show’s “profane, florid prose” continue while shots of male full-frontal wood are hardly noticed, makes Deadwood’s popularity “very revealing, if you’ll pardon the pun.”

Diffrient discusses Deadwood’s dirty talk in an upcoming book, Reading Deadwood: A Western To Swear By (I.B. Taurus).
