Islamic Superheroes Debut In Comic Book Form

KUWAIT CITY, Kuwait (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – The creator of a new breed of Islamic superheroes called the 99 says his characters aren’t all that different from Western superheroes.

According to Dr. Naif Al-Mutawa, the 99 stands for the “belief that Allah has 99 attributes” – but that’s pretty much the biggest difference between Western or Japanese heroes and his Islamic ones.

The rest of the 99’s backstory, says Al-Mutawa, is very much in keeping with Western superhero “archetypes.”

He adds, “They are all orphans who are called by a sign to a higher purpose.”

Al-Mutawa says Peter Parker and Bruce WayneSpiderman and Batman, respectively – are both examples of orphans called to the superhero life.

As far as teaming up with Superman, Al-Mutawa says partnering up with DC and Marvel Comics will help that happen soon, “God willing.”
