Thats because a new two-disc record called Rep Yo Set features unsigned and unknown rappers from 27 of the most gang-infested L.A. hoods, including South Central.
The CD is being compiled by several respected rap industry moguls, among them Robert Lewis III, best known for his record label, Reputable Records.
Surprisingly, Lewis says the security for the project wasnt as big an issue as one might think but they did have to take precautions while scouting talent in the nascent rap stars high-crime hometowns.
Says Lewis, Once we got the blessings of the O.G.s [for each turf], we were alright. The only time we were refused entry was when [gang leaders] said they couldnt guarantee our safety.
Lewis isnt concerned if hes accused of stoking gang confrontations, adding, If we can be accused of anything, its of bringing these guys together to offer a positive, non-violent alternative to the young kids in their neighborhood.
