John and Helen Taylor are currently in the middle of a 70-day global jaunt in their Volkswagen Golf FSI 1.6 in hopes of setting a new worlds record for fuel efficiency: They aim to cover 18,000 miles using only 35 tanks.
They started on Jan. 17 in their hometown of London and have already been through Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand.
Today (Mar. 16), they begin the U.S. leg of their journey in San Francisco and are driven to get to New York by March 24.
The Taylors get an estimated 51 miles per gallon but arent able to get the most mileage possible since the rules prohibit them from coasting.
Thanks to fuel saving tips from the trips sponsor, Shell, John Taylor is confident he can complete the trip around April 3 or 4 in less than the estimated 35 tanks even if he and Helen get stuck in gas-sapping traffic jams.
But the real challenge may be for the drivers who end up next to the Taylors at intersections and have to listen to the couples choice of driving music: Luciano Pavarotti, ABBA and Dr. Hook And The Medicine Show.
