Wednesday, March 1, 2006 Reduces Need For New York Dumpster Diving

NEW YORK (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Dumpster diving may be a thing of the past thanks to one garbage aficionado who’s leading people to the good stuff.

New York-based Jim Nachlin has launched a website called which lets people post the exact location and a photo of discarded but desirable junk in New York City via camera phone. The location is linked up to Yahoo! Maps, which helps garbage junkies get to the spot ASAP to pick up the, treasure.

Nachlin admits, “Some people are sort of repulsed by it, but there’s all sorts of interesting stuff that’s thrown out.”

Unwanted items like crutches, a puppet and bike parts were recently posted and Nachlin says someone also threw out some “stereo speakers that looked brand new.”

Of course the idea behind GarbageScout is to clean up the streets and save people money, but Nachlin says as “a lifelong garbage aficionado,” both finding and pondering about discarded items is fascinating.

He says, “Sometimes the question is: ‘Why did this person hang onto this thing for so long?’”
