Lou Gehrig’s Disease Patients Approve Of James Woods’ ‘ER’ Performance

LOS ANGELES (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Actor James Woods got a lot of support from the Lou Gehrig’s Disease community in preparation for his upcoming guest appearance on ER airing Feb. 2.

Woods plays Dr. Nate Lennox, a former professor of Maura Tierney’s character, Abby Lockhart, who is suffering from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

Using a video camera, he taped his portrayal of a patient with ALS and showed the footage to real patients suffering from the disease.

Woods says they were impressed with his depiction and even gave him a few pointers.

One characteristic of the disease is choking while eating, and Woods says, “One of them asked, ‘Would you like to see how I eat?’”

By the end of the experience, he says he learned about the horrors of the debilitating disease, which he describes as “a soul trapped in a corpse’s body.”
