‘American Idol’ Producer Admits: ‘I Love The Deluded’

LOS ANGELES (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – American Idol producer Nigel Lythgoe is confirming what the show’s fans may have suspected all along: He loves the bad singers who try out for the show.

Well, not all of them.

As Lythgoe puts it, “I love the deluded. The ones who think they actually have talent, but not the university student who’s auditioning as part of a bet.”

There are some other things Lythgoe isn’t fond of – such as contemporary music.

Lythgoe says there will be a lot of theme episodes this season and admits one of the reasons why the show focuses on oldies is because, in his words, “We don’t think there are that many great songs out right now. They come out in drips and drabs.”

American Idol begins its fifth season on Fox this Tuesday (Jan. 17).
