Mall Santas A Dying Breed

NEW YORK (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – The laps of mall Santas laps are staying drier this year – mostly because visits have dropped 41 percent since 2001.

That’s according to the International Council of Shopping Centers – and one event planner has a reason why.

Suzen Mesco, president of American Events & Promotions based in Boulder, Colorado, says skyrocketing costs forced her to pull out of the once booming mall Santa business.

She says online shopping has diminished the social aspect of going to the mall, and the cost of taking a photo of a tyke on St. Nick’s lap has skyrocketed from $5.99 to about $15 a snapshot.

Another problem that was cutting into costs was doting parents who were using their own camera to snap a shot of junior on Santa’s lap.

Mesco says while mall Santas may be dwindling, Kris Kringle is popping up in other places.

She says homeowner’s associations and corporations still request Santas for public appearances.
