When Thompson isnt performing like Presley, he serves as president of the Professional Elvis Impersonators Association, an organization that includes between 75 to 100 members around the world.
Thompson started the organization five years ago to help his fellow impersonators network and gain respect in the entertainment world.
Its not easy. Many people have Suspicious Minds about Elvis impersonators thanks to second-rate Kings with homemade costumes, substandard sound systems and, worse, no resemblance to the man theyre celebrating.
As he puts it, If you dont look, sound or move like Elvis, dont do this for a living. It weakens the business for the rest of us.
The spotlight is shining especially bright on Elvis this week because Tuesday (Aug. 16) marks the 28th anniversary of his death and its traditionally the busiest time of the year for impersonators.
