Napkin Art Brings Artists Into The Fold

OAKLAND, Calif. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – A cafe in Oakland, California, has been bringing art to the table for 23 years in the form of napkins.

Mama’s Royal Cafe is holding its 23rd Annual Napkin Art Contest, where artists who can make art out of paper napkins can win cash.

Restaurant owner George Marino says he started collecting napkin doodles left behind on the table more than 23 years ago, and was inspired to start the contest.

Over the years, people have made submissions ranging from drawings and paintings on paper napkins, to objects like an apron woven out of napkins.

Word of the contest has spread and Marino has received submissions from as far as Massachusetts and Japan in the past.

This year, the deadline for entries is March 31 and the winner of the $300 first prize will be announced April 15.

Send napkin art entries to: Mama’s Royal Cafe, 4012 Broadway, Oakland, CA 94611.
