Kids On Leashes Take Over Gallery

Where do you think you're going, little boy?

SAN FRANCISCO (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Keeping your kid on a leash could be considered a form of artistic expression.

That’s the case at Johansson Project’s upcoming exhibition, If Only, starting Thursday (May 27), which features life-sized sculptures of children made out of newspaper, plastic bags, archival tape, and glass created by Rune Olsen.

The child sculptures are fastened to a “brat strap” – those leashes that parents use to wrangle in their children when out and about.

For maximum effect, leashed children will be scattered across the gallery, obstructing the space just like real-life hyperactive kids would.

Curator Kimberly Johansson says the sculptures are “simultaneously humorous and confrontational” because they dare to ask whether “brat straps are a practical device to supervise a child’s exploration or instrument suited only for controlling an animal.”

She believes that by “blurring the line between animal and human,” the display explores the difference between freedom, control, and submission.
