Thats what author Harmon Leon found out while traveling the U.S. for his latest book, The American Dream: Walking in the Shoes of Carnies, Arms Dealers, Immigrant Dreamers, Pot Farmers, and Christian Believers (Nation Books).
Leon says pot farmers are a good example of a weird subculture that lives their own American dream by doing what they love growing, selling, and smoking weed.
Although their job sounds chill, Leon says its prone to paranoia because gangs and robbers are constantly trying to break into pot farms to steal their goods.
Still, dedicated potheads stick to their ganja gig because it makes them happy, and the pursuit of happiness is what the American dream is built upon.
Leon says swingers, Bible-thumping Christians, and carnies all live the dream in their own ways too, despite their extreme lifestyles.
He believes part of the American dream is immigrating to the States, which he simulated at a border crossing attraction in Mexico City where he paid $20 to have fake border patrol guards shoot at him.
American Dream hits shelves Monday (Oct. 6).
