The Nifty After Fifty fitness center in Garden Grove, California, offers Cane Fu and Cane Aerobics for seniors, where they can use their canes to help improve their flexibility, balance, strength, and scrapping skills.
According to founder Dr. Sheldon Zinberg, instructors take seniors ages 50 to 88 through a variety of strength-training and self-defense exercises with their canes, including choke holds and knee jabs.
If they use their canes correctly, Zinberg says elders could cause significant damage to attackers, especially with a cane shot to the ankle or leg.
Cane Fu students use a cane made of hard oak wood during workouts for empowering results.
Zinberg says, It improves their mobility and stability, and theyre less likely to injure themselves at home. Mature adults feel less fragile and more secure.
He says canes are an excellent self-defense tool because, You can take them anywhere and they wont be considered a concealed weapon. No one suspects a thing!
