The 6th Annual Altered Barbie Show is bringing artful renditions of the American toy icon to San Franciscos 94124 Gallery tomorrow (Aug. 1) through August 17.
Barbie dolls chopped and melted into everything from mummies and rocketships to drunken, drug addict vagrants will be displayed, along with some dolled-up in kinky costumes.
Exhibit director Julie Anderson explains, There are some artists that will show risque Barbies. I have no aversion to that, as long as it remains respectful. One guy got mad at me because I didnt allow his S&M Barbie, but she looked like she was in actual pain.
Though she welcomes a bit of controversy, Anderson says shes looking for thoughtful pieces that have true artistic quality.
As she puts it, Its really easy to just do an sexy Barbie or cut off all her hair and stab her. We want it to be interesting.
