Nigel Lythgoe: ‘I Don’t Want To Butcher The Beatles’

LOS ANGELES (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – American Idol producer Nigel Lythgoe dreams of having a Beatles theme night on Idol – but only if the Fab Four’s tunes are sung by extremely good singers.

Lythgoe – who’s been producing the hit show for six seasons – has been trying for years, to no avail, to get the rights to the coveted Beatles songbook so Idol contestants can sing the tunes for America.

Says Lythgoe: “I’m always keeping my fingers crossed for a Beatles night on American Idol, but the [John] Lennon and [Paul] McCartney song rights are hard to come by. We’ve almost gotten the songs cleared a few times, but it hasn’t worked out. They just keep teasing us!”

And while the British TV mogul would love to see Beatlemania on Idol, he has one rule when it comes to John, Paul, George, and Ringo’s classic jams.

Lythgoe says, “I would only want to have a Beatles night on Idol when the best singers remain in the competition. I would hate to ruin Beatles material. It would pain me to see it butchered by bad singers!”

The seventh season of American Idol premieres tonight (Jan. 15) on FOX.
