Howie Mandel Undergoes ‘Monk’ Therapy For Germaphobia

LOS ANGELES (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Funnyman Howie Mandel is a well-known germaphobe, and recently, guest starring on Monk really helped him get a handle on his disorder.

This Friday (Jan. 11), the Deal or No Deal host is starring in an episode of Monk opposite series star Tony Shalhoub, and Mandel says the show about a private detective [Shalhoub] with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder has helped him cope with his own case of OCD.

Mandel suffers from severe germaphobia, where he can’t shake hands with anyone because he’s afraid of germs.

So while filming Monk, Mandel truly identified with the OCD character of Adrian Monk.

Mandel explains, “Monk acts out what I feel inside. I just like things to be neat and I don’t like germs. Being on the show for me was more for self-help than entertainment!”

But despite his Monk therapy, Mandel still won’t be shaking hands with anyone – including enthusiastic Deal Or No Deal contestants – and prefers hugs or his usual fist-to-fist greeting instead.

He says, “I’ve been known to spend countless hours washing my hands if I think there are germs on them. But hugging isn’t an issue for me; I have three children, so it can’t be!”

New episodes of Monk begin airing Friday on USA Network.
