Andy Samberg Relies On Mustaches And 80’s Rock

SAN DIEGO (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Andy Samberg rocks a bushy, stick-on, handlebar mustache in the new comedy, Hot Rod, but he admits getting the ’stache just right was a difficult task.

Samberg – best known for his work on Saturday Night Live and parody videos like Dick In A Box with Justin Timberlake – says his fake facial hair was crucial to his wannabe stuntman character, and it took “lots of training” to get the hairy smirk just right.

Samberg jokes, “Getting the perfect mustache was important, so I did a lot of upper-lip exercises. A lot of our budget for the film went to my mustache training, and I’m not gonna lie, I was on the juice. I had to – the mustache was pivotal.”

But the stuntman mustache wasn’t the only accessory Samberg relied on. In fact, songs from Swedish 80’s rockers, Europe, were also crucial part of the film.

Samberg says he and director Akiva Schaffer used almost the entire Europe album, The Final Countdown, for the film because the truly “inspirational” classic 80’s rock was perfect for Hot Rod.

He adds, “Some people wonder why so many songs are by Europe, and I just think, ‘Why aren’t they all by Europe.”’

Hot Rod leaps into theaters today (Aug. 3).
