Helen Gilbert penned the tell-all book Okay Girls Man Your Bunks! (Pedestrian Press) which chronicles the 87- year-old womans journey as one of the first ladies to lay her life on the line in more ways than one during a time of war.
In her enlisted expose, Gilbert recounts the tale of how she broke the rules and went up, up, and away with a pilot when sparks suddenly started flying.
As she puts it, We had a lot of electricity and ended up in a bunk in the back. I thought, wow! Mile High Club! That was kind of a new thing back in those days.
But writing about her airline amor and her life on the frontlines made Gilbert feel a little looser than she thought.
Says Gilbert: Writing this book was like going to the gynecologist and getting a Pap smear. Everybody was looking inside me.
