The actor posed for Cosmopolitan magazine back in 1972 and the shot is being revived for a new DirectTV ad that appears in the Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition.
Reynolds is seen smoking a cigar with his left hand strategically placed and the tagline reads, Everything should be seen in DirectTV HD....Well, maybe not everything.
Direct TV executive Jon Gieselman says the decision to revive the Reynolds shot was, in part, more for shock value, than to play to the content of the issue.
He adds: Great ads can get lost.
Gieselman says Reynolds signed off on the ad and that Sports Illustrated officials were laughing out of their chairs, and figures the mags male demographic will have the same reaction.
Plus, he adds, Its also a treat for women who are thumbing through the issue.
