Tasty Tortillas Are Perfect For Art Lovers

SAN FRANCISCO (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – One man in San Francisco doesn’t like to just play with his food, he likes to create art on it too.

That’s the word from Rio Yanez, an artist who likes to paint outside the box – and on tortillas.

Aside from typical art canvases, Yanez creates art on corn tortillas, which have been displayed in galleries around San Francisco.

The designs range from pictures of celebrities like Snoop Dogg to religious figures like the Virgin Mary.

Explains Yanez:“We originally used tomato paste to get the art on the tortillas so they could be edible. Now we use special inks and digital heat pressing, which sucks the moisture out of the tortilla so the art stays on there a lot longer.”

Yanez says one of the reasons he started doing tortilla art had to do with his Chicano heritage and he jokes that “Chicanos always see the Virgin Guadalupe in their food, so I might as well validate their food apparitions.”

Yanez adds that although the art may be edible, he’s never had a gallery visitor chow down on his tortilla works.
