John Stossel: ‘Porky Pig Is My Role Model’

NEW YORK (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Here’s something to talk about: Today (May 8) marks the start of Stuttering Awareness Week and 20/20 correspondent John Stossel is not keeping quiet about it.

Stossel might be known for his commanding, assertive TV voice but that wasn’t always the case – thanks to his stuttering problem.

He’s the official spokesman for Stuttering Awareness Week and admits the condition almost cost him his career because he was so “embarrassed” by it.

Now he keeps his stuttering sentences under control by doing exercises and pretending he is someone else while on air.

Although Stossel cites fellow stutterer James Earl Jones for inspiring him to keep talking about, he also gives props to tongue-tied cartoon Porky Pig.

Stossel says Porky is a good role model for stutterers because he never lets anything hold him back – even when Daffy Duck drives him daffy.

As Stossel puts it, “Stutterers shouldn’t let shame get in the way of what they want to do.”
