California Candidate Using Rap To Run For Congress

BURLINGAME, Calif. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – A congressional candidate in California’s Bay Area with a passion for writing rap lyrics is hoping to hip voters to his political views with some dope rhymes.

Robert Barrows, a Bill Gates look-alike who is running as a Democrat for California’s 12th Congressional District seat, has already released two hip hop songs about politics.

One is called “Run for Office” and the other is called “Big Bucks,” both are gritty political satires skewering big money power politics that recall the Warren Beatty movie, Bulworth.

The thing is, both songs were written in 1989, years before the Beatty flick, back when one of Barrows’ favorite MCs, Ice Cube, ruled the rap charts.

Barrows is challenging longtime Republican incumbent Tom Lantos, but notes he’s not running “to sell songs but to save lives” on a strong anti-Iraq war platform.

A sample of the lyrics from “Run for Office”: If I turn out to a s–– heel/ just remember who you voted for, that’s for real/ I’m here for the kill/ Gonna run for office!
