The Straight Poop On Avian Flu

NEW YORK (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – It’s never pleasant to get pooped on by a bird, but one New York M.D. says cleaning up the slimy mess is the least of your problems in some parts of the world.

Dr. Mitchell Gaynor, who discusses Avian Flu in his book Nurture Nature, Nurture Health (Nurture Nature Press), says if you’re in Asia or another outbreak area these days, “clearly you could get [Avian Flu] from any bird secretion, including bird feces.”

While he doesn’t think everyone should wear poop deflecting hats as a special precaution, Gaynor says it’s important for people in infected areas to avoid poultry farms and markets and to always wash their hands after coming in contact with birds.

On the home front, Gaynor says Americans don’t have to worry yet because we haven’t had any outbreaks, but ponders, “Might there be before Thanksgiving? Maybe. I guess it’s possible.”

Gaynor is pleased the U.S. is taking steps to work on a vaccine, but notes it’ll take at least nine months and that, “Ironically, the vaccine is grown inside of chicken eggs.”
