Hurricane Cocktails May Be In Bad Taste

WATERFORD, Mich. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Those pink-colored Hurricane cocktails may taste good but drinking them may be in bad taste for the next few weeks.

That’s the word from etiquette expert Simone Silvestri, who says some people with connections to the Gulf Coast may not want to be reminded of Hurricane Katrina and may be offended if you order hurricane cocktails, which are made with fruit juices and light and dark rum.

Also, Silvestri says the No. 1 rule of good manners is to err on the side of caution.

Philadelphia-based manners maven Barbara Pachter agrees and says it’s especially distasteful to toast any hurricane victims with Hurricanes.

Hurricane victims aren’t the only people whose feelings you have to worry about. Pachter says it is bad form to tease women named Katrina by saying things like, “I better not get you angry, huh?”

However, Silvestri says that kidding with Katrinas falls into an etiquette “gray zone” and says “it depends on how well you know them. Some Katrinas might think it’s funny.”
