Fuzzy Navel Celebrates 20th Anniversary

NEW YORK (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – The Fuzzy Navel cocktail is celebrating its 20th anniversary and its creator thinks that’s just peachy.

Bartender Ray Foley admits his memory is fuzzy but he created the Yuppie mixture of peach schnapps and orange juice in September, 1985, to promote DeKuyper Peachtree Schnapps, which had just hit bars.

Foley says he wanted a drink that would be simple enough for the average bartender without overpowering the peach taste.

He tried various combinations but the best combined orange juice with the peach schnapps and inspired test subject Jack Doyle to proclaim that he “could still smell the fuzz on the peach.”

Foley took the fuzz from the phrase and added “navel” because he garnished the drink with a navel orange – and insists no double entendre was intended.

The drink became an immediate sensation and he’s still proud when he hears someone order it. Still, not everything has been sweet for him. Foley sometimes gets into arguments with so- called drink experts who don’t know he created the drink and insist the beverage contains vodka.
