Half-Ton Brother And Sister Mortgage House For Gastric Surgery

EAGLE ROCK, Calif. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – A brother and sister who tip the scales at a combined weight of 1,159 pounds are recovering after undergoing weight loss surgery yesterday (Jun. 7) at Olympia Medical Center near Pasadena, California.

The weighty issue at hand is that the two had to mortgage the house they share to pay for the $27,000-a-person cost of the surgery because no insurance company would cover them.

Dr. Carson Liu, who performed the operation on 580-pound Cyrus Tehrani and his 579-pound sister Sheila, says they were willing to pay up to $45,000 each.

Dr. Liu implanted a silicone band around each sibling’s stomach which brings it down to the size of a thumb.

While some may wonder why a person waits until they’re 500 pounds before seeking help, Dr. Liu says many people withdraw from friends and family out of embarrassment when they reach 250 pounds and pig out on high-calorie foods, which can make them balloon up to a quarter ton in a year.
