Piggy-Back Riding Isn’t Just For Kids

SONKAJARVI, Finland (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Piggy-back riding is normally reserved for youngsters, but a contest in Finland is letting adult couples get in on the fun.

The 2005 Wife Carrying World Championships is taking place July 2 during the Sonkajarvi County Fair and dozens of back- breaking participants will stumble along a 900-foot course of sand, gravel and grass surfaces which includes land and water obstacles.

While there is no maximum to the weight of the participants, skinny, bone-showing females a la Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton are not allowed, with the minimum weight set at 108 pounds.

The only equipment allowed is a belt worn by the carrier.

In addition to a cash prize, the couple that completes the course in the fastest time – usually around a minute – receives the equivalent of the wife’s weight in beer.

There are also awards for most entertaining couple, best costume and the strongest carrier.
