NEW YORK (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – The sounds of New York are truly the “bell” of the ball as far as one man is concerned.

Ringing bells are a major part of the sonic landscape of NYC, and artist Stephen Vitiello is celebrating their iconic chimes with his art installation, A Bell For Every Minute.

The site-specific artpiece opens next Wednesday (Jun. 23) at the 14th Street Passage – a semi-enclosed tunnel.

Vitiello recorded the sounds of city’s most recognizable bells, including the ringing bell of the New York Stock Exchange, the United Nation’s Peace Bell, and the many other chimes that fill the streets, like bike bells, diner bells, and neighborhood church bells.

For every minute that the installation is open, he’ll play a bell.

He says, “Each of these bells has not only a sound that is distinct but also a cultural meaning and purpose. Bells have a quality of sound that can cut through city noise.”
