NEW YORK (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – The New York City Marine Corps Council is proudly saluting NYC’s best pulled pork sandwich.

Recently, Chef Sara Jenkins, who runs the East Village eatery Porchetta, was summoned to action by troops in Afghanistan with a unique request.

Marines had been searching for the best sandwich online and her pulled pork specialty came up, so they asked Jenkins if she could send some sandwiches overseas.

Jenkins figured out a way to ship 15 pulled porks and fresh bread to Afghanistan within days for the soldiers, which was no easy task.

Still, she feels it was the least she could do.

To thank her, the NYC Marines will honor Jenkins with an award at their “Mess Night” benefit on June 30.

Civilians are rarely invited to the annual event, where attendees are encouraged to behave badly. For every rule they break – like swearing and chewing gum – they must pay a charitable fine.

Meanwhile, other restaurateurs can donate through the “NYC Restaurants Love Our Troops Campaign” on nycmcc.org.
