NEW YORK (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Takeru Kobayashi may be the Michael Jordan of competitive eating, but it seems he’s lost his stomach for the craft.

Only days before the annual Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island, Kobayashi backed out reportedly due to disputes with Major League Eating.

But AOL Senior Correspondent Buck Wolf says this isn’t about money, it’s about pride.

Wolf explains, “Kobayashi was a legend. When he ate 50 hot dogs in 12 minutes nine years ago, he doubled the world record. But the truth is, [competitive eater] Joey Chesnut has beaten him four years in a row, and Kobayashi knows he can no longer win.”

But don’t count on Chesnut to win either this year. Wolf says the smart money is on up-and-comer Patrick Bertoletti, who’s also a trained chef.

And Wolf knows winners when he sees them, since he was a chew- by-chew commentator at the famous food fight for ABC News during Kobayashi’s glory days.
