SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – The kids in Scottsdale, Arizona, aren’t sticks-in-the-mud – they’re stuck in the mud.

This Saturday (Jun. 19) is the city’s 35th Annual Mighty Mud Mania, where kids get to roll around in giant mud pits and compete in obstacle courses.

Organizer Terry Erickson says youngins love the muddy madness because for once, they’re actually allowed to get completely filthy.

Their dirty playground is top-notch, too, since the city works for weeks making the mud pits fun and safe.

Erickson says the “clean” Arizona mud is a mixture of silt, sand, and water and contains no fertilizer or grass. In fact, they “handscreen” every grain to ensure it’s of the highest quality.

What results is thick, mushy mud that’s easy to play in, although they do get the occasional kid who gets stuck.

After they’ve had enough mud-slinging, children are lined up and hosed down by local firefighters so they can go home squeaky clean.
