MARTINEZ, Calif. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – To truly celebrate the martini, you should go straight to the source.

The city of Martinez, California, is raising a glass to the martini this Friday (May 14) with the first ever Martini Festival.

The event celebrates the fact that the very first martini was shaken up at a local watering hole way back in 1874.

Legend has it that a gold miner came in wanting to knock back a drink that was “special” and new, so the bartender grabbed some gin and invented the “martinez” on the spot, and the rest is history.

Spokesperson Cynthia Murdough says they won’t be pouring the original martini recipe at the event since it’s “not as palatable” as modern-day martinis like Cosmopolitans and Lemondrops.

Attendees will get in the spirit by dressing up in vintage attire a la Rat Pack, making the entire evening feel like “a trip back in time.”
