South Africa: Ultimate World Cup Loser?
South Africa is getting tons of attention for hosting the 2010 World Cup, but at what price?
Friday, June 11, 2010 2:02 GMT
NEW YORK (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) South Africa won the bid to host the 2010 World Cup, but once the soccer matches are over, the country may still lose. The new documentary, World Cup Soccer In Africa: Who Really Wins?, unveils what it truly means for South Africa to host the World Cup which starts today (Jun. 11) in terms of costs and social impact on the country.
Co-producer Gary Baddeley says the global event has certainly put South Africa on the map, but its also left the nation with a huge bill to pay afterwards.
Since millions of citizens are in poverty, their government really cant afford all the money theyve spent on building new stadiums just for the World Cup.
In the end, Baddeley says the only real winners are FIFA, wholl make billions in revenue, none of which will go to South Africa.
Once the soccer tournament skips town, the giant stadiums which have forced entire communities and schools to relocate wont be of much use.
