FRUITA, Colo. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Folks in Fruita, Colorado, are cuckoo for their local hero: A headless chicken named Mike.

Back in 1945, a local man tried to slaughter a chicken by chopping off its head but failed to kill it. The miracle bird lived for 18 months without a head, becoming a famous sideshow attraction.

Today, the tiny agricultural town celebrates Mike The Headless Chicken and his will to live with an annual Mike Festival, happening this Friday (May 14).

Fest organizer Ture Nycum says Mike has always been revered as a local hero for his hard-headed determination.

Even without a dome, Mike still pecked around for food and preened his feathers just like any other chicken.

This year, townies will honor Mike through an 1980s “Let’s Get Physical” festival theme complete with a big hair contest and totally rad threads.

Nycum thinks the highlight will be the “Chick Olympics,” which includes an egg toss and Peep and wing eating contests.
