LOS ANGELES (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – The opening of Disneyland 55 years ago was such a mess, the park should’ve closed right on the spot.

Longtime L.A. tour guide Stephen Schochet, author of Hollywood Stories, says that if Disneyland had been one of Walt Disney’s movies, it would’ve had an extremely short run.

He says that on Disneyland’s opening day – July 17, 1955 – only 10,000 invitation-only tickets were handed out but they were so easy to forge, three times as many people bombarded the park.

Schochet says half of the rides broke down due to “excess weight” and from there, things sank fast – literally.

The asphalt on Main Street wasn’t dry yet, so women wearing heels began sinking into the cement.

Meanwhile, a gas leak sprung in Fantasyland and fights began breaking out between visitors and ride operators.

There was also a plumber’s strike going on at the time so Walt Disney shut off the drinking fountains and several patrons fainted from exhaustion.
