NEW YORK (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Condoms come with a long, fascinating history, and one New York museum is sharing the gist of it.

The Museum of Sex is currently hosting Rubbers: The Life, History & Struggle Of The Condom, an exhibit that shares the long, hard road prophylactics have been on to become the No. 1 STD and pregnancy prevention tool.

Curator Sarah Forbes says condoms of yore were made of all sorts of strange materials, including linen sheets, fish bladder, and animal intestines.

One early version of the jimmy hat was actually made of a thick rubber that Forbes likens to a bike tire. They were reusable and gave off a strange smell that Forbes admits must’ve been decidedly unsexy.

However, it got the job done for resourceful lovers.

Forbes explains, “When it comes to sex, people are incredibly inventive. They figure out ways to go about family planning and STD prevention.”
