LOS ANGELES (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – American Idol cast-off Aaron Kelly didn’t just have to hit the notes on the show, he had to hit the books.

The 17-year-old high school student was booted from Idol this past Wednesday (May 5), but deserves an “A” for effort.

Like all contestants who are minors, he had to juggle both singing and going to class on set, although he credits school for keeping him sane.

Kelly says taking classes was a welcome distraction from the competition. While other contestants stressed non-stop about the results, he was pre-occupied “thinking about astronomy.”

He believes the balance helped, even if he did have to get up earlier than the others each day to attend class.

But it wasn’t all work and no play at Idol school.

Kelly says fellow contestant “Big Mike” Lynche has been talking about organizing a mini prom for him, and his dream date for the dance is teen queen Selena Gomez.
