LOS ANGELES (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – The influx of vampires in mainstream media is feeding into an odd trend: Teen biting.

Youth expert Vanessa Van Petten, who runs radicalparenting.com, says the latest fad among high school students is to bite each other on visible spots like the arms and chest.

The biting – done mostly by girls to guys – is a way for teens to “mark their territory” and let everyone know who their boyfriend is.

In talking to teens, Van Petten has discovered that the nibbling isn’t exactly sexual, so it’s “definitely not the new hickey.”

In fact, instead of doing it in dark corners, most kids bite each other at school, in plain sight.

Van Petten fears that the fang fad could lead teens to obsess with macabre things like blood and death, making them moodier.

And with the vampire flick Twilight: Eclipse hitting theaters June 30, it’s likely that even more kids will jump on the biting bandwagon.
