LOS ANGELES (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Today’s prom is more of a fashion runway than a place to parade a big, poofy princess gown.

According to fashion writer Angelica Teems of promadvice.com, modern-day prom styles are heavily influenced by what’s hot on the red carpet.

She says most girls are trading the standard prom princess look for more polished, “streamlined” gowns with far less rhinestones.

Also noticeably absent are those glitzy prom tiaras that teenage girls once loved. Now, Teems says girls are wearing more daring hair accessories like big flowers, headbands, and bows like those made popular by Lady Gaga.

They’re also stepping up their style with edgier shoes – maybe because gowns have gotten much shorter.

Teems says teenage boys have upgraded their prom gear too.

This year, the trend is to dress up boring tuxes with a quirky patterned bowtie or suspenders resulting in what she calls “chic geek.”
