LOS ANGELES (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) Although Casey Kasem is best known as the voice for the legendary American Top 40 countdown, he says he also is recognized just as often for being the voice of Shaggy on Scooby Doo.
Casey who will turn 66 on April 27 says that when he was first hired to play Shaggy, series creators Will Hanna and Joe Barbera told him to play the perpetually hungry character as a hippie.
He didnt know what a hippie was suppose to sound like, so he imitated Richard Crennas squeaky-voiced character on the Eve Arden sitcom, Our Miss Brooks instead.
Casey says no one noticed the connection except for Crenna who now jokingly asks him, Hey, where are my royalties.
These days, Casey is doing a new version of American Top 40 for Chancellors AMFM Radio Networks and is also giving Shaggy lessons to Saved By The Bell actor Dustin Diamond for a proposed motion picture version of the cartoon.
