CALEXICO, Calif. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – A recent California law that prohibits smoking in bars has some smokers fleeing America to get their nicotine fixes.

The American smokers have started crossing the border to patronize Mexican taverns which allow smoking indoors.

Sylvia Lenus, who runs a bar in Calexico, California, says her business is down 60 percent since the ban started. Most of her former customers now walk 8 blocks south to Mexicali where Mexican taverns gladly welcome the smoking gringos.

Lenus says even though the smoking ban was passed to protect her employees from second-hand smoke, the workers may wind up losing their jobs because of declining business.

18 employees have had their hours cut and tips are way down.
